Learning in Action

Annie Wright is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, fully authorized to deliver the Middle Years Programme (MYP), which aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others.

The MYP provides a framework that supports students’ emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community. Both inquiry-based and interdisciplinary, the MYP emphasizes the need to write, speak and listen effectively. MYP challenges students to think analytically and creatively and provides opportunities to solve problems and make decisions in real world contexts. Integrity and the recognition of the interrelationships between people and responsible citizenship are integral to the MYP.

With the help of learning specialists, the Middle School faculty addresses individual differences in ability, skill development and learning styles. Teachers strive to bring out the best in their students and make the journey as fun and impactful as possible.

What exactly is IB?

The IB, or International Baccalaureate, is a nonprofit organization founded in Switzerland in 1968. Its mission is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through understanding and respect. Originally developed for children of diplomats, IB programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners. These programs also provide a framework to assess performance according to world standards.
How is the MYP really different from a standard curriculum?

The MYP ensures a deeper understanding through eight subject groups (arts, sciences, math, design, physical & health education, language acquisition, language & literature, and individuals & societies), allowing students to see how subjects intertwine and how they relate to the world beyond the classroom. The emphasis of the MYP is on conceptual understanding, and encourages students to inquire, act and reflect, rather than simply memorize facts. As a result, students develop approaches to learning that they rely on throughout life.
What are some of the distinctive features of the MYP?
- Key concepts are big ideas which form the basis of teaching and learning in the MYP. They ensure breadth and depth in the curriculum and promote learning within and across traditional disciplines.
- Global contexts provide shared starting points for inquiry into what it means to be internationally minded, framing a curriculum that promotes multilingualism, intercultural understanding and global engagement.
- Approaches to teaching and learning, a unifying thread throughout all MYP subject groups, are skills that help students manage their own learning. They provide a foundation for success in education and the world beyond the classroom.
- Action and service, essential components of the MYP, set out clear learning outcomes that grow from students’ participation in local and global communities. MYP projects are informed by respected models of service learning.

Annie Wright's IB Middle Years Programme curriculum is both inquiry-based and interdisciplinary, and emphasizes the need to write, speak, and listen effectively. Students are challenged to think analytically and creatively and are given the opportunity to solve problems and make decisions. Integrity, the recognition of the interrelationships between people, responsible citizenship, and a sense of self-worth are important qualities in the Middle School.

Our one-to-one laptop program begins in Grade 6, with technology incorporated through various platforms and used in all classrooms.
